Research insight
The problem was not the calculation. It was the screen asking for everything before the person understood where to start.
Context
Materials engineers working in steel and metallurgy industries need to perform calculations to define the materials used in refractory equipment such as furnaces and boilers.
In this project, these calculations were done with support from other companies, and the projects did not have a centralized repository for storing history and updates. This made it difficult to consult previous projects and increased the risk of errors during field work.
The challenge was to transform this technical process into an application that made both performing calculations and organizing and consulting projects easier.
Approach
Before designing the interface, I needed to understand how this type of calculation fit into the professionals' routine and in which situations the system would be used.
I planned and conducted semi-structured interviews with materials engineers and industry representatives, seeking to understand their routines, needs, main difficulties, and expectations in different usage scenarios.
From the research insights, I mapped the user flow and structured the solution architecture, defining how calculations, results, and projects would be organized within the system.
Then I led the UX/UI Design of the interface and developed a high-fidelity prototype, used in usability tests with professionals representing the target audience. The tests helped validate the solution and identify improvement points.
One of the main challenges was transforming complex calculation logic into a sequence of decisions that users could understand.
From flow to interface
Research guided the system flow and the organization of the main interface areas.
Mapping of the main steps and user decisions before interface definition.
Interface designed to organize the information needed for the calculation and guide the user during input.
Confirmation dialog for saving the calculation individually or as a new project, in this case becoming part of the repository for future consultation and updates.
Definition of styles and components used in the prototype.
Outcome
At the end of the consultancy, a system proposal was structured that organized the calculation process in a clearer interface and also centralized the project history.
Since the project would be presented to investors, the research results and design decisions were also documented to support the evolution and development of the solution.
What we delivered
Beyond the interface proposal, we documented the research and design decisions to support the continuity of the project.
